Photos and Talkies

Good photos, good coffee, grainy development

Broadening horizons

Whenever I travel I learn something.

Most of the time, I learn something about the people and culture. Sometimes I learn something about the area and infrastructure. Sometimes I learn something about myself. In any case, when I took this photo, I learned that I’m impatient and that you should always make up enough developer to cover the entire roll of film.

The photo was taken on a Toyo 45A II, on TX400 120 film, using a 6×17 back. The developer was something – I don’t have good notes, but it was whatever developer I could get shipped to Alaska. Getting things in Alaska is a pain. It was shot on the turnagain arm, from the Anchorage borough, looking south at Hope, Alaska (which is a really cool little town, highly recommend).

Communities are interesting things; they have subconscious ideas, feelings, biases, and knowledge, all wrapped up into a sticky ball of culture. Sometimes the cultures are dramatically different one street over, and sometimes they’re so similar that you can’t figure out how it happened. But I find I learn things from every culture I experience.

That’s basically what all of this is about; taking new ideas and broadening horizons. People are a little bit like plants; if they don’t grow, expand, and adapt, they get strange and stunted. They also want electrolytes. Brawndo, for choice; it’s what plants crave.
